The New Mexico Chapter... How We Got Started

As employees of a disability services nonprofit, we want everyone in our community to feel welcome and accommodated. We are honored to be a part of this campaign to make universal changing stations a reality in New Mexico.

Several months ago, the organization that we work for, Adelante, launched a new business focused on accessible tourism in New Mexico. We soon realized that Adelante needed to look at barriers for people with disabilities associated with visiting places in New Mexico and participating in events across our great state. One of the barriers we quickly identified is the lack of adult/universal changing tables in New Mexico. As part of our research, we came across Changing Spaces and knew that we wanted to be part of this advocacy group. As co-chairs we may not have a personal connection, as a guardian or family member, to the need for universal changing tables, but what we do have is a passion for raising awareness of this issue and a willingness to advocate for universal changing tables in New Mexico.

Our initial strategy is to increase knowledge about why universal changing tables are important by talking with people involved with tourism including New Mexico’s acting Secretary of Tourism, local municipalities such as Red River, NM and discussion with legislators about the possibility of introducing legislation.

Our work and our journey is just beginning in New Mexico, and we are grateful for the support and leadership of other Changing Spaces across the country.
