Zoos With Universal Changing Tables
Updated: Apr 17
A trip to the zoo is always a family favorite. People of any age can enjoy a long day exploring
the various habitats and spending quality time together. Most of us take for granted having access to a restroom when you need one throughout your day of fun. However, if you or your loved one has a disability or medical condition, and need a place to change protective undergarments, you're probably out of luck. After an hour or two exploring the zoo you'll probably need to head home to address your restroom needs. Too bad you've just spent between $25-$30 for a ticket, and had to cut your day short.

Some zoos have stepped up to make their facilities more inclusive. We have compiled a list of zoos from across the USA that are raising the bar to accommodate all visitors. By adding a companion care/family restroom with a universal changing table, visitors of all ages with disabilities will have a private, clean and safe place to change. No more leaving early. Visitors to these zoos can stay and enjoy their day to the fullest!
Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden
The OKC Zoo and Botanical Gardens has a powered, height adjustable adult size changing table available in the Nursing Suite, located near the front of the zoo near the ticket counter. The table has a soft changing surface, safety side rail, and safety belt.
Milwaukee County Zoo
A powered, height-adjustable adult size changing table is located in a stand-alone bathroom building (see the red box with wheelchair symbol on the map). First, grab the key from the Zoo Administration Office (#28 on the map). The restroom is clearly marked on both sides. This changing table adjusts in height from 12'' above the floor (very low), to 41'' above the floor (very high), and every height in-between. This allows the user to find the right height for them for the safest transfer possible. It also has a safety side rail that locks in place. The changing surface measures 75.25″ L x 31.5″ W, so it will acommodate users of various heights. It also supports 500 lbs! What a wonderful addition to Milwaukee county zoo.
Blank Park Zoo, Des Moines, Iowa
There is an adult size, powered, height-adjustable changing table located in a family restroom next to Gogo's Plaza.
ZooTampa at Lowry Park, Tampa, Florida
There is an adult size, powered, height-adjustable changing table located in the women's restroom in the Wallaroo station.
Kansas City Zoo, Kansas City, Missouri
There is an adult size, powered, height-adjustable changing table located in the family restroom near the Elephant Expedition.
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Columbus, Ohio
There is an adult size, fixed height changing table located in a Family restroom in Adventure Cove, next to Stingray Bay.
San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio, Texas
The San Antonio Zoo has installed a powered, height adjustable adult size changing table in Discovery PLAYce, which is located near the Great Lawn. When you enter Discovery PLAYce, turn right down the hallway, and look for the room marked "Care and Comfort" on the right side of the hall. Play Leaders inside of Discovery PLAYce are available to help you locate the Care and Comfort room.
Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, Cincinnati, Ohio
The Cincinnati zoo has installed two wall-mounted, fixed-height changing tables in sensory-friendly bathrooms in Vine Street Village. Because of their smaller size, (the changing surface is only 4 feet 10 inches long, and 19 inches wide), they are great for toddlers and children, but teens and adults will have a hard time using them. Because they are not height-adjustable, only individuals who are light enough to be lifted by their caregiver onto the changing tables will be able to use them.
Tip for installing an adult changing table:
For zoos planning to install an adult changing table, choose a height-adjustable table that is at least 70 inches long. This will be the most inclusive and widely accessible table. Click here for a list of great options.

Now that you've seen these incredible zoos, you may think, what's next? Share this article with your local zoo and encourage them to step up their game! People don't know what they don't know. Once they understand this widespread need, they will be much more likely to take action and make plans for an accessible and inclusive restroom with an adult size changing table.
